He had always been a good and responsible insurance agent, careful with client’s payments, prompt with delivering contracts.  But one day, he lost INR 15 000 cash that a client had given him as deposit for insurance premiums.  He could not believe his misfortune.  Why did he make an exception by accepting cash instead of cheque?!  If he had insisted on a cheque from the client, this would not have happened.  He could not find the missing cash.  In the end, he paid the premium with his own money.  And put the whole incident down to bad luck.

But his wife knew better.  Her conscience pricked her.  She remembered an incident in her office last week.  She had stood by and watched her junior colleague pay INR 1 500 out of her own pocket because the young girl had made a mistake in her work and caused a small loss for the company.  She could have prevented the loss by correcting the young girl’s mistakes.  But she didn’t.  She wanted to teach the girl a lesson because she was tired of correcting the girl’s numerous daily mistakes.  She thought that if the girl had to pay for the loss, she would become more careful.  So she had remained silent as the girl cried, lamented and parted with her precious money. 

Now she knows that she was learning the lesson instead.  Her deeds last week had come back to affect her, and her husband is paying the price, tenfold.  It was the law of 10-fold karma in action.
